Speaking Percussion, Playing Language: Oral Notation in Peking Opera Percussion

Luogujing, the oral notation of percussion music in the Peking opera, is an onomatopoeic system in which verbal syllables with different tones are used to represent percussion sounds, playing techniques, dynamics, and pitches. A special musical language used to talk about music, luogujing serves as a key pedagogical means and crucial performance aid. This session will introduce this oral notation in its cultural context and discuss how to integrate this dynamic system into a Chinese language classroom.
